Winter Fabrics: Velvet & Velour

As the air turns crisp and mornings begin with that familiar Cape Town chill, our wardrobes naturally lean towards fabrics that offer both comfort and elegance. Winter dressing isn’t only about layering to stay warm. It’s about choosing textures that make you feel confident the moment you put them on.

This season, two timeless favourites are once again stealing the spotlight: velvet and velour.

Rich, soft, and wonderfully tactile, these fabrics bring a sense of quiet luxury to everyday dressing. They don’t shout for attention, yet somehow they always seem to receive it.

Velvet vs Velour: What’s the Difference?

At first glance, velvet and velour may seem almost identical, but they’re quite different.

Velvet is known for its luxurious woven pile, giving it a smooth finish with a subtle sheen that catches the light beautifully. Velour, on the other hand, is knitted rather than woven, making it softer, stretchier, and often more relaxed in appearance.

Think of velvet as your beautifully wrapped gift and velour as your favourite cosy blanket. Both are lovely, but each serves a slightly different purpose.

The beauty is that both deserve a place in your winter wardrobe.

Styling Velvet with Confidence

Velvet has a way of elevating even the simplest outfit.

A velvet blazer layered over a crisp white shirt instantly transforms everyday tailoring into something special. Pair velvet trousers with a lightweight knit, or choose a jewel-toned velvet dress for an evening event where understated glamour feels just right.

The trick, if there is one, is balance.

Since velvet already has plenty of visual richness, keep the rest of your outfit fairly clean. Structured handbags, classic ankle boots, and minimal jewellery allow the fabric to remain the hero.

Sometimes less really is more.

Why Velour Deserves Another Look

Velour has quietly made its return, and it’s far more sophisticated than many of us remember.

Today’s velour appears in elegant co-ords, relaxed wide-leg trousers, hooded jackets, and softly draped dresses that blend comfort with contemporary style. It’s the perfect fabric for weekends, casual lunches, or even working from home without feeling like you’ve completely surrendered to your tracksuit.

We’ve all had those mornings where comfort wins. The good news is that with velour, comfort and style can happily coexist.

Colour Makes the Difference

Winter is the perfect season to embrace deeper, richer shades.

Emerald green, burgundy, navy, chocolate brown, charcoal, and classic black allow velvet and velour to reveal their beautiful depth. As the light shifts throughout the day, these colours seem almost alive, creating movement and dimension without any extra effort.

It’s rather like watching sunlight filter through stained glass. The colour changes ever so slightly, and that’s part of the charm.

Luxury That Lasts

One of the reasons I love recommending velvet and velour is that they rarely feel temporary.

Unlike fast-moving trends, these fabrics return season after season because they offer something beyond fashion. They offer longevity. Investing in a beautifully made velvet blazer or a well-cut velour set means you’ll reach for it year after year, styling it differently each time.

Fashion should feel exciting, yes, but it should also feel practical.

This winter, allow texture to become part of your signature style. Whether you choose the polished elegance of velvet or the relaxed sophistication of velour, you’re embracing fabrics that remind us style doesn’t always need to be loud.

Sometimes the softest touch leaves the strongest impression.
